Mobile Money Brief – India

In September 2011 I wrote a Mobile Money Brief on India for the Clarion MMT Gateway, discussing the vibrant ecosystem and initiatives under way in India.

Some of the key observations then were that:

  • India is on track to leverage mobile bank-based model at scale – but, will trajectory equal that of M-PESA Kenya?
  • Domestic card scheme RuPay is now in use by 4 banks – how will this impact plans such as the Visa wallet?
  • Foreign companies restricted from launching prepaid products and mobile wallet – how does this impact the Google wallet?

Over the next few months I expect to post updates on the Mobile Money scene in India, and talk about the huge strides being made by all the different players.
